SMART OBMed Module

Hypertension Module

This freelance project was completed for Montfort Hospital as part of a study examining whether medical students learn more effectively through slideshows or videos. The study focused on medical students studying pregnancy, and I was tasked with creating the introduction segments for each module as well as developing one complete module of my own. The module I produced has a duration of 21 minutes and contributes to the overall comparison of the two instructional formats.

The Process

The process began with reading through the script and creating a very rough storyboard. Since the storyboard was only for my own reference and not part of the final presentation, I kept it simple in order to save time and meet the tight deadline. From there, I began animating directly in sync with the provided audio, using the storyboard as a guide. As the animation progressed, I created the necessary AI assets along the way, refining visuals to match both the narration and the medical accuracy required.

The Challenge

The challenge was to transform a provided script and audio narration into a clear, engaging, and educational animated video. The goal was to present the material in a way that was visually coherent, accessible to medical students, and supportive of the study’s objective of comparing learning outcomes between slideshows and videos.

Some of the key requirements included ensuring that animation was consistently active whenever the speaker was talking—there could be no still moments during narration. Another important goal was maintaining medical accuracy in all visuals, which required careful attention to detail and research to support terminology and concepts I was initially unfamiliar with. This presented a learning curve, but it was essential to create a video that was both engaging and credible for medical students.

The Solution & Outcome

For the visual style, I chose a whiteboard, hand-drawn aesthetic that balanced simplicity with professionalism and medical accuracy. This approach allowed me to capture my own straightforward, clean style while still aligning with the client’s goals of creating an engaging yet credible educational resource.

Through this project, I was able to strengthen both my time management and communication skills. Working under a tight deadline required careful planning and efficiency, while the need for accuracy meant maintaining constant communication and providing frequent updates to the client. This was the first project where ongoing collaboration was essential, and it taught me the importance of balancing independent problem-solving with regular check-ins to ensure accuracy and alignment.
